NASA: ISS to soon have new water systemThe U.S. space agency says the International Space Station will soon have a new water system, allowing up to six people to live aboard the orbiting lab. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration said the new water recovery system is the second part of a comprehensive life support system for the station. It's scheduled to fly aboard space shuttle Endeavour on STS-126 that's targeted for launch later this year.
By recycling water, the system reduces the station's dependence on Earth resupply by cutting the amount of water and consumables needed to be launched by about 15,000 pounds a year. Through a series of chemical treatment processes and filters, the new system creates water clean enough to drink, NASA scientists said. NASA engineers and scientists at Hamilton Sundstrand Space Systems International Inc. in Windsor Locks, Conn., led the design and development of the water recovery system. Scientists watch water help proteins fold
Once believed unique to Earth, water has been found in comets, Mars and space -- and now U.S. scientists find it isn't really quite what they thought it was.Water in our bodies has different physical properties from ordinary bulk water, because of the presence of proteins and other biomolecules, said University of Illinois Professor Martin Gruebele. When bound with water molecules, proteins fold into their functional, native states in a process essential for life.Using a technique called terahert more... 08.08.2008 - Anti-virus software might soon be obsolete 08.08.2008 - UPI NewsTrack Health and Science News 07.08.2008 - Cassini to again inspect Enceladus 07.08.2008 - California company recalls frozen ground 07.08.2008 - Researchers halt spread of HIV with RNA 07.08.2008 - Solid state heating and cooling is studied 07.08.2008 - Tyson recalls chicken breast tenderloins 07.08.2008 - Tree rings used in African drought study 07.08.2008 - EPA rejects lower biofuels standards |
