Earlier this year  at Google I/O, was announced the Chrome Web Store (an open marketplace for web apps).
The main importance of the store is to make it easier for users to discover web apps and for developers to reach a large audience.

Google Chrome users who find web apps in the store will be able to create convenient shortcuts in Chrome for easy access. The creators promise developers a convenient and secure payment system.

The team is preparing for their launch later this year. The first step towards this milestone was making available a developer preview of the Chrome Web Store. It basicly means that developers can now start uploading apps and experiment with packaging them, installing them in Chrome and integrating their payments and user authentication infrastructure.

Michael Noth, Software Engineer at Google wrote in a blogpost: «When the Chrome Web Store launches, it will replace the current gallery, featuring a completely new design for users to discover great apps, extensions and themes all in one place. Until then, only you can see the apps you upload - they will not be visible to other visitors of the gallery during this developer preview. In the meantime, you can continue to use the gallery for publishing Chrome extensions and making them available to Chrome users.»

In the video below developer advocate Arne Roomann-Kurrik presents additional information on why Google started to work on the concept of web apps for Chrome.
