Sweden Bank stolen online
Moldova.ORG -- As a result of internet fraud from the Sweden’s largest bank Nordea, were stolen more than £600,000 sterling. Security firm McAfee has said it is the biggest case of internet fraud reported so far.
Some 250 customers of the bank were affected by the scam, which involved tailor-made Trojan horses being unwittingly downloaded onto the victims’ PCs.
Victims were sent emails purporting to be from Nordea in which they were encouraged to download a spam-fighting application. Users who downloaded the attached file, raking.zip or raking.exe, were infected by the Trojan haxdoor.ki.
Haxdoor.ki activated itself when the users tried to log in to bank online. It saved the login information and displayed an error message asking the user to resend the information. The details were then sent to the fraudsters, in this case believed to be Russian criminals, who used the information to move money from the accounts. Users’ details were sent on to Russia via servers in the US.
Some 121 people have been identified as involved in the conspiracy and two have been convicted, according to police. The masterminds have still not been identified.
All customers affected by the attacks will be compensated, Nordea said. "Customers must never suffer loss due to things like this," spokesman Boo Ehlin told the Swedish press.
