Number of Internet users in Moldova doubled in 2006
The total number of connections to Internet doubled last year and reached 459.9 thousand, according to a report of the National Telecommunication and Informatics Regulatory Agency (ANRTI).
As a result of this increase, the penetration of Internet connections per one hundred inhabitants of Moldova ratio increased from 6.59% in 2005 to 13.55% in 2006.
ANRTI specifies that the total number of connections includes connections to Internet via mobile telephony nets based on GPRS/EDGE technologies. The latter increased by 26% and reached 366.3 thousand compared to 2005.
The connections to Internet via broadband (with a speed equal with or higher than 128 Kbps) increased twice and reached the figure of 21.7 thousand. The absolute majority of high-speed Internet users have chosen ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) technology, which ensures rapid access to the global net via usual telephone line and allows using the phone at the same time. The number of users that access Internet using this way increased last year to 65% and reached the figure of 16.6 thousand.
On the segment of narrowband connections, the number of Internet users increased by 5.9% and reached 438.2 thousand. The number of users that accessed the global net using dial-up connection (using the normal telephone lines) increased by 41.8% in 2006 and reached 71.9 thousand users. Experts say that this increase was determined mainly by the expansion of the dial-up Internet services in the rural regions and application of more accessible tariffs for these services.
ANRTI's report also specifies that the market value of the data transport and access to Internet increased last year by 50.3% and reached the amount of 196.22 million lei. The investments in this sector increased by 16.8% and amounted to 80.5 million lei, and almost all the amount was invested in procurement and installment of net equipment.
According to the situation on 1 January 2007, the ANRTI registered 760 companies authorized to provide informatics services, including 234 that render data transport via earth nets and VSAT, of which 41 are operational providers of Internet access services. // BASA-Press
