MySpace No. 1 Internet search term

NEW YORK, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- MySpace, eBay, Yahoo! and Mapquest were the most popular U.S. queries across all search engines in 2006, an online monitor's report said Wednesday.

MySpace-related search terms accounted for half the top 10 search terms to all sites, the Hitwise report said.

Search-term data is the closest proxy for what is on the minds of Internet users and is a great measure of brand equity, global research manager Bill Tancer said. − For example, MySpace saw tremendous growth in traffic in 2006, which is a reflection of the increased brand equity for MySpace.

The top three search terms in the television show category were American Idol, Deal or No Deal and Days of Our Lives, the report said.

The top three athlete search terms were retired basketball great Michael Jordan, injured Thoroughbred racehorse Barbaro and U.S. racecar driver Danica Patrick.

Hitwise also measured search terms in movies, sports, TV in general, travel, travel destinations and clothing. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
