By the end of the year the Ministry of Information Technologies and Telecommunications will introduce the new telecommunication technology - Wi Max, worked out for providing universal wireless communication for big distances with a big speed.

According to the ministry, the launch of the Wi Max technology will provide a wide access to telecommunication services by means of intensifying competition at the telecommunication market in Moldova and by reducing tariffs on such services.

The wireless technology may provide the connection to the Internet at a distance of 50 km with a speed of 50-70 megabyte.

"Moldova may have various advantages by using the Wi Max technology owing to the decrease in the expenditures on the necessary infrastructure and owing to a wide coverage, taking into consideration that the access to information depends on the availability of a wideband access to the Internet for physical persons and companies", the minister considers.

WiMAX, meaning Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a telecommunications technology that provides wireless transmission of data using a variety of transmission modes, from point-to-multipoint links to portable and fully mobile internet access. The technology provides up to 10 Mbps/s broadband speed without the need for cables. The technology is based on the IEEE 802.16 standard (also called Broadband Wireless Access). The name "WiMAX" was created by the WiMAX Forum, which was formed in June 2001 to promote conformity and interoperability of the standard. The forum describes WiMAX as "a standards-based technology enabling the delivery of last mile wireless broadband access as an alternative to cable and DSL".
