Internet Browser for Nintendo's Wii

Nintendo and Opera Software recently announced the release of a free beta version of the Opera's Web browser specifically designed for the Wii. According to Nintendo, owners can download the Flash-enabled browser through the new Wii Internet Channel and use it to browse the Web.

Additionally, the Wii Remote can be used in conjunction with an on-screen keyboard to allow for point and click text entry. The browser may also play a hand in incorporating web technology into games, one Opera spokesperson said.

"This newest Wii Menu channel provides yet another feature to draw non-gamers in," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime in a statement. Fils-Aime also said that the final version of the Opera browser will be available at the end of March, 2007.

Wii owners will have until June to download the official Opera browser from the Wii Shop Channel, after which time it will cost 500 Wii Points.

The announcement comes after recent news that Opera is also supplying a browser for Nintendo's handheld DS gaming device.

And while Nintendo has said it won't build the browser directly into the Nintendo DS, the company said the software will be sold like a game cartridge in Japan in July, 2007. Both companies have not announced plans to sell that browser in other markets outside of Japan.
