In Indiana kids will forget what a pen writing is this fall
Elena Vnorovscaia / Chişinău / Moldova.ORG / -- Writing on paper has become considered as an age-old writing method. It was decided that it will no longer be taught in Indiana schools beginning from fall 2011. Instead, students will be expected to become proficient in keyboard use.
Some parents have already expressed their dissatisfaction with the upcoming innovations. They are concerned that their children won’t be able even to put a signature to the document. Computers can’t always be there for pupils.
While memo from school officials think that this skill is no longer a vital one? There are still many people who don’t think so.
Seems like a smart move as being able to type efficiently is a vital skill in today's world, as opposed to knowing how to write cursive, which — like being able to churn butter and knowing how to hitch a horse to a wagon — is no longer needed.
That is why the directive from the state's Department of Education allows schools to decide for themselves whether to continue teaching cursive or disband the archaic practice altogether.
As a matter of fact, ETA of typing in U.S. is about 200 characters per minute. Professional typist prints at speeds of 300 characters and above.
To record a speaker's speech, you need to type 450 characters per minute, and note-taking for meetings and debates will knock your fingers even faster, from 700 to 900 beats per minute.
