Diaspora, an open source alternative to Facebook, has gone live!

Chisinau (Moldova.ORG) -- The social network was founded less than five months ago during a period when Facebook came under fire for its privacy settings.

The community-funded project is currently only open to a small number of invited people.
«Every week, we’ll invite more people, starting with our Kickstarter backers, and then moving through our mailing list. By taking these baby steps, we’ll be able to quickly identify performance problems and iterate on features as quickly as possible.», Maxwell, Raphael, Daniel and Ilya, the four US students behind the service wrote in a blog post.

The team say they look forward to feedback on better ways to make the site more secure.

Their idea of building Diaspora started earlier this year during a period of intense criticism of Facebook.
«We’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how people can share in a private way, and still do all the things people love to do on social networks.»
