Damn Small Linux 3.3 Released
Damn Small Linux has a nearly complete desktop, including XMMS (MP3, and MPEG), FTP client, links-hacked web browser, spreadsheet, Sylpheed email, spellcheck (US English), a word-processor, three editors (Nedit, nVi, Zile [emacs clone]), graphics editing and viewing (Xpaint, and xzgv), Xpdf, emelFM (file manager), Naim (AIM, ICQ, IRC), VNCviwer, SSH/SCP server and client, DHCP client, PPP, PPPoE, a web server, calculator, Fluxbox window manager, system monitoring apps, a host of command line tools, USB support, and pcmcia support as well. Damn Small Linux is a very small in size- 50 MB.
They have also made a lot of fixes like:
• Fixed mount tool for cdrom and floppy devices
• Fixed typo bug in mkmydsl
• Fixed typo in exitcheck display of Iwconfig * Fixed bug in frugal_lilo.sh when installing from a file
• Fixed man script to support hard drive installations
• Updated zoneinfo to support new Daylight Savings Time
• Updated mydsl tool; download directory is now verified
• Updated pendrive installation scripts to be device independent both install and runtime
Damn Small Linux has features like:
• It can boot from a business card CD (less then 50 MB) as a live Linux distribution;
• It can also boot from a USB pen drive;
• It can run *inside* Windows;
• It can run very nicely from an IDE Compact Flash drive;
• Can be transformed into a Debian OS with a traditional hard drive install;
• It can run light enough to power a 486DX with 16MB of Ram;
• It can run fully in RAM with as little as 128MB (you will be amazed at how fast your computer can be!);
• Last but not least, Damn Small Linux is highly extendable without the need of customizing.
While Damn Small Linux is based on the well known FluxBox window manager, it includes powerful and useful applications for daily usage, like Dillo, Netrik and Firefox web browsers, the Sylpheed e-mail client, Xzgv image viewer, Xpaint photo editor and the emelFM file manager.
