Canadian taxman seeks eBay names
The Canada Revenue Agency said it wants eBay Canada to identify all high-volume Canadian sellers on the Web site.
The CRA said it wants to know whether the affected individuals and companies reported online sales income in 2004 and 2005 for tax purposes.
Lawyers for eBay Canada said the company didn't have access to the records they said were stored by the parent firm in computers outside Canada, the Toronto Globe and Mail reported.
Justice Roger Hughes of the Federal Court of Canada ruled that eBay is legally obliged to turn over the information even if it is located elsewhere, the newspaper report said. But, he reserved his decision on the issue of the validity of the CRA investigation.
Canadians spend about $5 billion online each year and eBay is by far the largest electronic marketplace, accounting for about one-fourth of sales, the Globe and Mail said. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
