Thousand of residents of Moldova watched on Monday’s noon the most spectacular optical phenomenon Halo. A halo is a ring of light surrounding the sun or moon. Most halos appear as bright white rings but in some instances, the dispersion of light as it passes through ice crystals found in upper level cirrus clouds can cause a halo to have color.

The specialists explained that this phenomenon is happening around the sun ones in 10 years, and around the moon this can be frequently.

The optical phenomenon “Halos”, is caused by ice crystals in cold cirrus clouds located high (5–10 km, or 3–6 miles) in the upper troposphere. The particular shape and orientation of the crystals is responsible for the type of halo observed. Light is reflected and refracted by the ice crystals and may split up into colors because of dispersion, similarly to the rainbow.

In case that the optical phenomenon is observed in summer, they say that this season will be very hot with winds, and if this phenomenon took place in winter, prognosis tells about a cold season.
