A new national record in France for SMS in the New Year’s night
Frenchpeople-users of mobile phones set a new national record for text messages in the night of New Year 2007.
More than 36 million SMSs were sent through transmitters owned by SFR and France Telecom subsidiary Orange between midnight and 1:00 am (2300 GMT and 0000 GMT), the two companies said.That was 25 percent more than for the same time the previous year, and a significant load of traffic for a country that counts 62 million inhabitants.
"In one hour, the network had to handle what it normally handles in a full day," an Orange spokesman said.
The total of text messages sent in that hour was to be revised upwards when the smallest of France's three mobile phone operators, Bouygues Telecom, adds its figures on Tuesday.The companies said in the lead-up to New Year's that they had been prepared for the spike in text messages and promised that none would be lost.
"Everything went very well. We doubled the number of staff compared to a normal night, with more than 100 people working," an SFR spokeswoman said.
The deluge represented a lucrative boost for the operators, which charge an average 11 euro cents (15 US cents) per SMS.
The night also saw a record in the number of MMSs sent. The number of those messages - which can transmit photo or video files between compatible phones --jumped by nearly a third, with Orange recording 147,000 in the hour following midnight, and SFR 140,000.
