10 million customers won’t get their HDDs in 2011

Elena Vnorovscaia/ Chişinău / Moldova.ORG/ -- Global demand for hard disk drives (HDDs) in the second quarter is estimated at 160 million units while total supply by the five main international vendors is expected to be 150 million units, resulting in a supply gap of 10 million units, according to industry sources.

Approximately estimated global demand for storage on hard disk drives in the second quarter of 2011 is 160 million units, while the five largest manufacturers can ensure the delivery of only 150 million units.

Thus, there is a shortage of 10 million hard disk drives, according to industry sources.

It is known that a growing increase in production volumes prevents the need for re-certification of production, restored after the earthquake. As a consequence, in the third quarter a deficit situation can get worse, because it is traditionally a seasonal increase in demand for HDD.

The gap may broaden in the third quarter as demand for PCs increases, the sources indicated.

Another increasing demand is the demand for optical drives. However, customers should not be afraid of deficit in this product segment Optical drives are in 3 times rarely than HDDs.

In addition, the natural disaster in Japan did not affect the supply of spare parts for these products.

The main Japanese suppliers, including Sanyo, Sharp and Panasonic, have relocated the production to other countries. And Taiwanese Lite-On IT and Quanta Storage provides the lion's share of supply of ready drives.
